The girls race is absolutely loaded with talent and the hunt for the team title will be a tough one. Some of the top teams from 2A, 3A, and 4A are scheduled to compete.
Bolles: Another site is reporting that Bolles be running a mixed team of Varsity and Junior Varsity runners in the varsity race on Saturday. From the report they will be running 1-2-8-9-10-11-12 as their varsity team. At the Spikes and Spurs Classic, the Bolles girls finished a close 2nd in the team race without Caitlin Collier. Based off of last week’s result, Bolles should still have a shot a winning as they put 12 girls in before most teams number 5 in Bunnell.
Creekside: The girls from St. Johns County opened their season by finishing 3rd at the Spikes and Spurs Invitational to Winter Park and Bolles. The Knights were lead by, sophomore, Claire Openshaw who won the meet in an impressive 18:47. The Creekside girls won a state title in 2014 and will be trying to once again get on the podium in the very competitive 3A state meet. If runners 3-5 can close the gap to number 2, this team could be the team to beat on Saturday.
Satellite: The Satellite girls are undefeated on the season after “winning” the Wickham Park Jamboree and the DeLand Invitational. Under Coach Butler, the Scorpions are starting to look like they did in the mid 2000s when they had the Shivers and the Sterns. The girls placed third last November at the 2A state meet behind Pine Crest and Bolles. Saturday will be their first test to see where they match up against the best teams in the state.
Other Schools to watch: Ponte Vedra, Bartram Trail
Caitlin Collier: The first race of the season will be a big test for Caitlin as it seems she just finished a long track season that saw her run a 2:03.32 for 800m. Caitlin did not participate last week at Spikes and Spurs, despite being there in attendance. As the defending 2A state champion in all distance events, she should be considered the favorite until she is beaten.
Claire Openshaw: Claire started out her season with a big win at the Spikes and Spurs Classic. As a sophomore, she is going to have a tough rough getting to the top of class 3A. In 2016, she finished 6th overall at the 3A state meet but was the 3rd freshman to cross the line. Last weekend she was able to edge out a seasoned veteran in Rafaella Gibbons, tomorrow she gets a shot at Collier.
Claire Moritz: Claire will make her 2017 debut at Bale N Trail after finishing 11th at the 3A Cross Country Championships. Last year Moritz placed 7th at the Bale N Trail with a time of 20:22 and was able to drop her PR to 18:26 that season. Claire leads a huge team of girls who will be hoping to podium this November.
Others to watch for: Marie Groppel, Ella Mickler, Mary Kate Maloney
