2017 Spikes and Spurs Meet Preview – Boys
Saturday marks the much anticipated start of the Florida high school cross country season. The 2016 seniors have moved on to college, and fresh young runners are ready to make their marks on the Florida cross country history books. Many of the better teams worked their butts of over the summer and are excited to see the fruits of their labor as they look to compete for the first time in school uniforms in 2017. Today we are going to look at what to expect at one of the bigger meets this weekend.
Bolles: The Bulldogs look to be the premier team in Florida for the 2017 season. They come off of a 2016 Cross Campaign that saw them finish Runner-Up in the team competition to Trinity Prep. The Bolles squad lost only one senior from last year’s team, and bring back a whole group of boys hungry to show that their cross country team can bring home a state title too. The Bulldogs will be lead by Foot Locker Finalist, Charles Hicks.
Vanguard: For some people reading this preview, this may come as a surprise. For those who pay attention to more than just the virtual meets will know that the Knights will be bringing some serious ammunition up front with a few stud seniors. Diego Lavieri – Sosa is Vanguard’s top returner on paper with a PR of 15:52, but teammate Joey Fitzpatrick showed during track that he is back after running 1:53 for 800m. With the firepower up front and a solid supporting cast the Knights should be in the conversation as a team to look out for.
Peachtree Ridge: The teams from Georgia are hard to judge as they run on a state meet course that is said to be a lot harder than the one we run on in Florida. That being said, these guys are bringing a group that might see 2 runners finish before most teams get 1 across the line. If their 3-5 can close the gap, this team should finish in the top 3.
Others to watch out for: Bartram Trail, Nease, Fleming Island, Parkview
Charles Hicks (Bolles) – Hicks enters the 2017 season as the top returner in the state. After placing 2nd at the 2016 State Meet, Hicks dropped a 15:07 at Foot Locker South and qualified to run at the National meet in San Diego. Hicks will be looking to not only bring home a team title to Bolles, but also an Individual title come November. Hicks has a PR of 15:07 which he ran at the Foot Locker South Region in 2016.
Joey Fitzpatrick (Vanguard) – Spikes and Spurs will mark Joey’s return to cross country. As a freshmen, in 2014, Joey placed 3rd at the Spikes and Spurs Invitational with a time of 15:54. He later on ran 15:35 that season at the state meet which was good enough for 5th. After almost a 2 year hiatus from the sport, Joey returned to the track in February and worked his way back into the spotlight. In the 3A state 800 he placed 2nd with a time of 1:53. Joey has a PR of 15:35 which he ran at the State Meet in 2014.
Chase Condra (Peach Tree Ridge) – Condra has a history of doing well at the Spikes and Spurs Invitational, placing 19th here as a freshmen and 3rd as a sophomore. He is the 11th ranked returner in Georgia, and will be hoping to make a statement early as he comes to compete with some of the best runners in Florida. Condra has a PR of 15:51 which he ran at the Wingfoot XC Classic in 2016.
Others to watch for: Chase Rivera, Timothy Doyle, Diego Lavieri-Sosa, Andrew Miller
