The defending 3A state champion at 15:03.3, the fastest returning time by any boy in Florida in any class, and he stays here until somebody beats him. He did not race this weekend, while ten teammates lined up in the Cecil Field Elite race — Armando Cruz, Jack Michalak and Liam Salom among them. Projected forward at the near-neutral boys conversion he sits at 15:03.9, which is still the best number on the board anyway.

The board and the principle agree, which makes this an easy call rather than a stubborn one. Mantecon beat Cruz by 9.4 seconds at the state meet, on the race that counted, and an August time trial his rival ran while he was elsewhere is not a result against him. No. 1 is not a projection of who is fittest today; it is a title, and titles change hands in races.

The first time these two line up together this fall settles it, and it will probably happen at a Belen practice.

He didn't race, and it doesn't matter. Mantecon ran 15:05.6 for fourth at Nike Cross Nationals last December as a Southeast at-large individual, was runner-up at the Brooks national championship, won his second straight 3A title by 9.4 seconds, and put 14:33 on the board at the New World Spectacular. Gatorade named him Florida's Boys Cross Country Player of the Year. He won eight of eleven races as a junior. Nobody else in this state has a résumé within shouting distance, and the argument that he is the best returning boy in the country is a serious one.
